Designer Pump cloth ‘With a Twist’ (Verdraaid)
The pump cloth: this name renders recollections of a bygone era. What is the story again? Originally, the pump cloth was a blue and white checkered towel hanging next to the water pump. Everyone dried their hands with it. For centuries, these towels were hand woven on a loom with shafts. With the arrival of terry (around 1930) this woven hand towel lost its traditional role and became a tea towel in many households. However, in restaurants the pump cloth is still in use today. Chefs and their assistants have a wide range of purposes for which they use this blue and white checkered towel. This is why everyone, young or old, is still familiar with it!
The young Dutch designer Nienke Sybrandy is inspired by the pump cloth. Today's computerized loom fully allows for the ideas of artists. The technological options seem unlimited. In her design, Nienke expresses the idea of the twisting movement when drying hands in the checks of the towel. She revives the old-Dutch pump cloth with a contemporary design creating the impression that the two-dimensional pattern is waving, three-dimensionally, in the wind. She calls this ingenious design With a Twist (Verdraaid). Sanny de Zoete, of Sanny de Zoete Antique & Design Linen in Delft, The Netherlands, fell in love with it. She has taken this design into production ensuring that With a Twist is not only wonderful to look at but also very practical to use. This towel is good at drying because two natural materials are used for weaving: linen and cotton. In this case, finishing With a Twist literally creates a spectacular finished look.
This contemporary pump cloth belongs in the 21st century and is multifunctional. With a Twist is useful as a towel when cooking, great as a napkin with a tasty meal and it will dry stacks of plates after a delicious dinner with friends.
